"Earthquake!" is an interactive hands-on exhibit highlighting the viscoelastic properties of certain polymeric materials. It consists of two model buildings which represent the use of polymers in the construction of aseismic buildings. The models undergo test vibrations which are normally used for determining how buildings react in the case of an earthquake and how they resist its effects.

   About the exhibit   

"Earthquake!" is a stand-alone exhibit which needs a 220 V AC source to run the electronic control.

The exhibit consists of two main elements:

  1. a mechanical part, made of a building support surface linked up with a stimulator that produces oscillations transversely to the surface; two aluminium platforms, one laid down on supports made up of polymeric materials and the other one on aluminium supports where two wooden buildings models are set;

  2. an instrumental part, made of a generator giving a control signal to the vibrations stimulator, whose frequency and signal amplitude can be changed by the visitor, but according to a particular interval fixed by the project requirements; a vibration stimulator, with a suitable support, causing stresses to the buildings.

Respecting all safety standards, the visitor can observe the collapse of the buildings The buildings can be put back together by means of a system of tie-rods.
